How to price a workshop

Most independent facilitators price from what they feel comfortable saying out loud, which is usually well under what the market pays.

By McKinley Malbrough III, J.D., MS-HRM. Published September 12, 2026.

What does the market pay for live facilitation?

$1,500 to $3,500 per day for live virtual or in-person facilitation in the 2026 corporate market, with specialized compliance and technical work running 30% to 50% higher (Ruzuku, How to Price Training Courses, 2026).

Asynchronous course seats run $250 to $800 per learner, which is the number people accidentally benchmark against when they price live work.

Why does hourly pricing hurt?

Because the buyer compares your hour to a contractor hour, and because your income is capped by a calendar. It also punishes efficiency: the better your material gets, the fewer hours you can bill for the same result.

A named program with a defined outcome is a different purchase. The buyer is approving a result, not a timesheet.

How do I package a session so it gets approved?

One page: the behavior that changes, the format, the length, the price, and what the client owns afterward. No hourly breakdown.

Include the handoff explicitly. "Your team can run this again without me" raises the value and shortens the approval, because it converts a session into an asset.

Should I discount?

Have one published reduced rate with clear eligibility rather than negotiating each time. I publish 25% off seats for nonprofits, schools and public agencies, with no application.

A published discount protects your standard price. An improvised discount tells the next buyer your number was never real.
