Why nobody finishes your recorded training

Self-paced online courses finish at 10% to 20%. Live cohort programs finish at 85% to 96% (Ruzuku, State of Online Courses 2026). Same subject matter, same learners, an order of magnitude apart.

Which means a recorded library bought for 200 employees is realistically training somewhere between 20 and 40 of them, and you are reporting 200.

Because somebody notices you are not there. That is most of it. A calendar hold, a facilitator who says your name, eleven other people who saw you miss it.

The rest is that live sessions force a decision about time. Recorded training asks you to find an hour you do not have, repeatedly, and lose only to yourself when you do not.

Yes, for reference and for anything a person needs at the moment of use. How to submit an expense report should be a two minute video, findable in three seconds, not a live session.

The mistake is using recordings for the things that require practice or carry risk. Nobody learns to handle a harassment complaint from a video, and the completion data says most people do not even watch it.

Wrap live sessions around it. Assign one module, then hold a 45 minute live discussion where people bring one thing they will change. Completion rises because the live session is the accountability the recording lacks.

That is a real program built from an asset you already own, and it costs you a facilitator, not a new contract.
